Sick notes in Ireland, explained

What is a sick note?

In Ireland a sick note is usually called a sick cert or medical certificate. It's a signed statement from a doctor confirming that you're too unwell to work, or to attend school or college, for a stated period.

It's official documentation of your illness or injury, and of the time you need to recover.

Why you might need one

  • Your employer asks for proof of illness. Many do once you've been off for more than a couple of days, but policies differ, so check your contract or staff handbook.
  • You're applying for Illness Benefit from the Department of Social Protection, which needs medical certificates.
  • You're claiming sick pay from your employer.
  • Your school or college needs a record of your absence, for example for a missed exam or assignment.

What does it say?

A sick cert typically confirms that you're not fit for work (or school), the dates it covers, the date it was issued, and the issuing doctor's details and signature.

It's issued only if the doctor decides it's medically appropriate after your consultation. Whether your employer or institution accepts it is down to their own policy.
